How Skiing Works: In one easy lesson. (How a piece of melon can help you understand skiing)

The other day I dropped this piece of melon on the kitchen floor. I tried to pick it up by pushing a table knife under it.

After I'd covered about an acre and a half of floor I tried something different. I put my finger behind it while I pushed. Voila!

Without that resistance I could have been there forever.

Skiing works because of, and only because of, resistance.

The resistance we can obtain from the snow by doing stuff with our legs and bodies that enable our skis to get a push-back from the snow.

The only skiers who don't want resistance are the speed skiers – currently the records stand at over 158 mph for men, and 153 mph for women. Really!

Join the resistance!
